Welcome to the Materials Group at SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering! We are broadly interested in research focused on microstructure-property/performance relationships in a variety of materials, including metallic, non-metalic and composite materials. The applications include but not limited to energy production technologies, iron and steel making technologies, micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) devices, magnetic logic and data storage systems. Our research interest also includes interfacial science and engineering, such as grain boundaries and grain boundary complexions in oxides.
The research approach of our group is a combination of experimentation and theoretical modeling, with special emphasis given to the utilization of advanced characterization techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The theoretical modeling is carried out by computational materials science methods.
The ultimate goal of our research is to obtain better fundamental understanding that leads to the solution of certain materials issues in specific applications and facilitate the designing and development of new materials or materials systems and materials processing techniques.

High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope
Our group has access to a Titan™ Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) by FEI company, which is the world's most powerful commercially available TEM. With the capabilities provided by Titan™, materials characterization can be carried out at sub-angstrom scale with the highest quality.
Guangzhou Super-Computing Center
Located next-door to the Guanzhou Super-Computing Center, which houses the world's fastest super computer - Tian He No.2, we have unique resources to carry out computational materials science studies.
